Hand-blown glass is tougher than it looks, but it does not like heat shocks, harsh chemicals or the dishwasher. With a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a little patience, a Murano glass chandelier can look as bright as the day it was hung. This is the method we recommend to our customers.
What you need
- Two soft, lint-free cloths (microfibre is ideal)
- A bowl or basin of lukewarm water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid
- A thick towel to lay the glass on
- A soft brush for textured glass
- A stable step ladder and, for large chandeliers, a second person
What to avoid
- Hot water or sudden temperature changes, which can stress the glass
- The dishwasher
- Abrasive sponges, scouring powders and strong solvents
- Spraying cleaner directly onto the frame, bulb holders or wiring
Step by step
1. Switch off and let it cool
Turn the light off at the switch, and for a thorough clean switch off the circuit as well. Let the bulbs and glass cool completely before you touch them.
2. Take a photo first
Before removing anything, photograph the chandelier from several angles. On a chandelier with many elements, such as a Tronchi or Petali model, the photo makes rehanging much easier.
3. Remove the glass one piece at a time
Most of our chandeliers and sconces hold the glass on simple metal hooks. Lift each element gently off its hook and lay it on the towel. Never pull on the glass or the frame.

4. Wash in lukewarm water
Wash a few pieces at a time in lukewarm, soapy water, holding each one firmly. Do not pile pieces on top of each other in the basin. Rinse in clean lukewarm water.
5. Dry straight away
Dry each element with a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid water spots, then polish with the second cloth.
6. Dust the frame
While the glass is off, wipe the metal frame with a dry or barely damp cloth. Keep water away from the bulb holders and wiring.
7. Rehang and check
Using your photos, hang each piece back on its hook and check it is secure before switching the light back on.
Textured and faceted glass
Glass with a texture, such as graniglia (crystal grit), Rostrato points or faceted Poliedri blocks, holds more dust in its surface. Use a soft brush in the soapy water to reach into the texture, then rinse well.

How often to clean
- Every month or so: dust gently with a soft, dry brush or duster, with the light off and cool.
- Once or twice a year: a full wash as described above. Kitchens and rooms with open fires may need it more often.
If a piece breaks
Accidents happen. Many of our chandeliers, including most Tronchi models, ship with spare glass elements included, so keep them somewhere safe. If you need a replacement, send us a photo of the piece at info@solocosebelle.it and we will tell you what we can make for you.
